The Stock Market’s View of Chemicals: What is Hot and What is Not
Presentation by John Roberts, Managing Director, Mizuho Securities USA
The stock market has been setting all-time highs. But that hides the diversity of performance between the various sectors of the stock market. And so it is with chemical stocks, which itself is a diverse sector, with significant divergences between “what’s hot and what is not.” This webinar will highlight the divergence in chemicals stock performance, and the underlying trends behind that.
One trend behind this divergence has been the exposure to new trade policies. Local-for-local chemical businesses (e.g. industrial gases, coatings, etc.) have outperformed globally traded chemicals (e.g. primarily basics). The discussion will include why some of the businesses that in theory should benefit the most from these policies (e.g. U.S. producers targeted for protection) have been among the poorer performers.
Contributing to that divergence has been China’s continued production ramp into already globally oversupplied markets. That has resulted in the longest downturn in global basic chemical operating rates in modern history. This is reflected in recent dividend cuts by Dow Chemical, Celanese, Chemours, and Tronox. Whether or not these dividend actions are signs of a bottom will be discussed.
Our speaker John Roberts is a leading stock market equity research analyst and a veteran in the industry. Peter Young, CEO of Young & Partners, will be the interviewer for this fireside chat.
