Albemarle has been a trusted supplier of catalysts to the refining industry for more than six decades. Today, Albemarle’s customized catalyst solutions help our Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) and Hydroprocessing (HPC) customers meet the challenges of a continuously changing market landscape. Innovation has been a constant throughout in the evolution of refining and refining catalysts.  The decarbonization of the refining industry marks a major inflection point in that evolution.  Refiners are faced with changes in the feed slate, reduction of GHG emissions, and changes in product slate.  Two overarching trends are substitution of mineral based crudes by renewable feedstocks and the gradual shift in product portfolio from transportation fuels to petrochemicals.

Demand for chemicals derived from petroleum (crude-to-chemicals) is the fastest growing sector of global liquids demands to 2050 (McKinsey).  Additionally, alternative road transport fuel in the form of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and biofuels is expected to grow 33% p.a. by 2025 (McKinsey).  In fact, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects that biodiesel will account for ~10-15% of the diesel market through the 2030s.  With refiners trending towards petrochemical integration and biofuels production, refining catalyst technologies will play a key role in energy and chemicals production as the world moves towards net-zero carbon. Another exciting development is the chemical recycling of waste plastics by deploying a range of technologies including pyrolysis and hydrotreatment to circulate carbon.

Please join Albemarle Catalysts President Raphael Crawford as he examines the challenges and opportunities of the catalyst business through the Energy Transition.
