As factories have resumed activity following Covid-19 pandemic inspired shut-downs, supplies of semiconductor chips integral to the operation of mobile phones, cars, and a host of household and industrial appliances have been in short supply. Car manufacturers including General Motors, Ford, and Toyota are struggling to deal with the shortage and have slowed or idled some production lines.US and global semiconductor fab operators are gearing up to increase production but that will take some time. EMD Electronic Materials Global Head Anand Nambiar will give his perspective on the causes and cures for the shortage. As head of a major global supplier of chemicals and materials to fab operators, he has a unique perspective on what it will take to alleviate the shortages and how governments, such as the US and China, are maneuvering to back their semiconductor champions to secure technology leadership for their industry champions.
