'Learning from the History of Vaccines:  Lessons for the Future from Vaccination’s Surprising Past'

Over the past two years, the COVID-19 pandemic has placed vaccines and vaccination at the heart of animated conversations about science and public health.  There is no question that vaccines are an important part of preventing a wide variety of diseases on a global basis. This presentation will illuminate these contemporary conversations by framing them in the light of centuries of developing, delivering, and debating vaccines across the globe.  Drawing on the collections and expertise of the Science History Institute and other leading cultural institutions, Dr. Cole will share stories and insights from the history of vaccination—and suggest ways that today’s scientists and vaccine innovators can profit going forward from studying this rich historical record.

The Science History Institute collects and shares the stories of the innovators and scientific discoveries that shape our lives. It  preserves and interprets the history of chemistry, chemical engineering, and the life sciences. Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, it includes a library, museum, archive, research center and conference center.

It was founded in 1982 as a joint venture of the American Chemical Society and the University of Pennsylvania, as the Center for the History of Chemistry (CHOC). The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) became a co-founder in 1984. It was renamed the Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) in 1992, and moved two years later to the institution's current location, 315 Chestnut Street in Old City.

On December 1, 2015, CHF merged with the Life Sciences Foundation, creating an organization that covers "the history of the life sciences and biotechnology together with the history of the chemical sciences and engineering." As of February 1, 2018, the organization was renamed the Science History Institute, to reflect its wider range of historical interests, from chemical sciences and engineering to the life sciences and biotechnology.
